We are unable to cover the entire history of a country as rich as Colombia in just a couple of hundred words. So, from here we will make a brief but intense review of the history of Colombia.
As with most Latin American countries, Colombia’s history can be divided into several stages:
The pre-Columbian era, ie before the arrival of European settlers to America.
The colonial era in which European culture was introduced into Native American culture.
The age of emancipation or independence, in which Colombia achieved sovereignty.
The era of the Republic, which was formed the identity of Colombia as a nation to the present.
The time of Spanish colonization began when Alonso de Ojeda arrived with their browsers to the Guajira Peninsula in 1499. Just eleven years later, the Spanish founded the first settlement in this territory: Santa María la Antigua del Darien. After consolidating their rule, later founded other towns such as Santa Marta (1525), Cartagena de Indias (1533), Popayan (1536) and Bogotá (1538). Read the full story
