I have just returned from Colombia. My fiancee, Elizabeth, is Colombian and teaches English in Bogota.

I found Colombia to be a very beautiful country with happy beautiful people. I must admit that I was a bit apprehensive about going there due to the western hype about the dangers there. Nothing could be further from the truth. Everyone was helpful and friendly and even the police and security officials greeted me with the words "welcome to Colombia, enjoy my country". I felt safer there than in my own country of Australia. The western world could take a lesson from the Colombian people - just happy loving people. I'm very proud to be in love with one of these beautiful people.

I wanted to touch briefly on the security in the country. During my vacation I never felt threatened in any way. I was careful just as I would be in any city in the United States. I was cautious when traveling at night and limited my exposure to problem areas. I didn’t flash any money around nor did I wear any jewelry to speak of. As I said in my last post use common sense and you’ll be fine.

I just traveled to Medellin, Colombia for the first time this Christmas (2009). The country is incredibly beautiful, especially the mountains surrounding Medellin. The food was terrific (chicharon, arepas, chorizo, carne asada, oh, and let’s not forget the aguardiente and the jugo de guarapo). Of course there are many beautiful women there as well.

It was surprising that the malls there (Oviedo, etc.) were every bit as nice as any mall you would find here in the United States. Oviedo has all the trendy stores that you would expect from an upscale mall in addition to a small amusement park and a fantastic view of the mountains from its breezeway.

The thing that made the trip so special for me was the incredible hospitality of the people there. I have never met so many people who, as a whole, were so nice and happy. They were very polite and at every occasion went out of their way to assist me.

When traveling to Colombia, as with travel to any area you are not familiar with, use common sense. Don’t keep your wallet in your back pocket, don’t count your money in public, don’t wear jewelry or anything that will make you stand out. You want to blend in and keep beneath the radar. Try to limit speaking in English when you are in unfamiliar areas or with people you don’t know. If you need a taxi, call the cab company so there is paperwork generated, do not hail a cab off the street. If you need cash go to an ATM, in a mall if possible, and do not leave the mall, bank or store immediately after withdrawing money. Instead, take your time to be sure nobody is planning on relieving you of your money.

I can say without hesitation that if you visit Colombia you won’t be sorry. The people alone make the trip worthwhile but the scenery and the food certainly add to the enjoyment.

I fell in love with Colombia. I only spent 10 days there and it wasn’t nearly enough. I’m already planning my next trip and I guarantee next time it will be for a much longer stay.
