El Penol is a municipality in Antioquia department just 90 minutes from Medellin. One of its main attractions is the famous “Piedra del Penol”, a huge monolith of 200 meters high that many believe is of meteoric origin and that has 650 steps to help you get on and enjoy a spectacular view of the dam Peñol. 40 years ago the inhabitants of Penol had to be re-located (in what is now known as El Penol) and people flooded to build this majestic dam, now remains of the old Penol rest in the depths of the lagoon
El Penol located 90 minutes from Medellin is a must in the region, if you want to enjoy more of a country setting visit the same day the Circuit East.
Our advice is to take everything for a picnic or BBQ and after visiting the beautiful stone, can be found near a park called “Parque de la Culebra”(the name has nothing to do with finding snakes there). admission is 2.000 Colombian pesos (U.S. $ 0.80), once in the park can use pedal boats on the dam without additional cost and use all the facilities of the park. It’s really a beautiful place to relax for a while besides being very economical. To get here once the stone down and finish the street where you find the horses up to the stone, take the main road right past the bridge the park is immediately on your left. Once there you can rent a boat or jet ski on the lake, but when you know the prices may prefer to take just a pedal boat in the park offered for only the cost of entry (2.000 pesos).
