How to Rent a Car in Colombia

Before renting a car in Colombia, make sure a car is the best way for you to get around. In rural areas, buses are safer and very inexpensive. While a car may be best for getting around urban areas (particularly Bogota and its surroundings), be aware of the prevalence of traffic accidents in the country. Always wear a seatbelt when driving in Colombia or you could face a fine of around US$80.

Book your rental car in advance to avoid being gouged on price, and always carry your driver’s license with you. Major rental companies like Avis, Budget, and Hertz have offices at El Dorado Airport in Bogota. Don’t rely on your personal car insurance from back home to cover you, and always rent from an agency that offers insurance.

Take out the insurance and photograph your rental car in the presence of the rental agency worker to minimize the chances of being charged for scratches and dings that are already present. Make sure you’re not liable for theft before you sign off on the agreement. If you have a choice, opt for the safest car over the one with best gas mileage.

You are advised not to drive at night, to lock the doors at all times, and if you find yourself in a sketchy neighborhood, you may want to run the red lights in some cases. You’re not allowed to talk on your cell phone while driving, and when you’re outside of major cities, you are required to drive with your lights on. Should you encounter a military blockade, simply answer their questions, and you should be sent onward.

Expect heavy traffic in major cities like Bogota and Medellin, and be aware that signage is minimal on Colombian roads, so it’s easy to get lost. Always err on the side of caution.
