The great rivers, which contribute their waters to the basins of the Caribbean, the Pacific, the Amazon and Orinoco Creek and geography, they facilitate the construction of dams that increase the capacity of power generation and drinking water.

The wide range of thermal levels of colombia allows a large agricultural development, which varied food production is an important part of its economy. In the lower regions and warm Caribbean, the Andean valleys and savannas of the Orinoco, there are vast fields of bananas, sugar cane, rice, cotton, soybeans and sorghum. Also, the basement is the source of wealth. One example is the coal mine of the open world’s largest mined in La Guajira, with an annual production of around 50 million tonnes which makes Colombia the fifth largest producer of coal and the largest exporter thermal coal. At present, investments have been made to increase this production capacity and is projected to reach in 2010 to 70 million tonnes.

At home, there are several sedimentary basins that contain hydrocarbon deposits. Found oil reserves of 1.8 billion barrels at the Magdalena River valley and the foothills of the Cordillera Oriental, where the crude extract are among the lightest in the world. At present, there is a production of 540,000 barrels per day in addition to supplying domestic demand enough to export. Natural gas reserves, a source of clean and cheap energy for domestic and industrial consumption, amounting to 6.8 cubic gigapio. As alternative energy sources begin to use the oil palm, and bagasse from sugarcane to produce biofuel, and solar and wind energy.

One of the greatest potentials of the colombia is its biodiversity. Colombia ranks second in the world after Brazil, with only a quarter of its territory. This will allow in the future a great development in the fields of medicine and food production.
